Remember me?

So it's been quite a while hasn't it?

I've thought about logging on here and writing something since August but I've not known how to follow the post about my grampy, how do you follow that? Well the answer is you write about puppies, or one puppy in my case.

Everyone, meet Teddy.

I don't like small dogs, I call them rat dogs as when people walk them they look like they're walking a rat. I'm now a rat dog walker. A few weeks after my grampy died my nan expressed a desire to get a dog, it had been something she had been thinking about for a while but I don't think my grampy wanted one. I helped her look around for a rescue dog but she wanted a puppy. Last month we drove down to Neath to pick up this little dude. He's a whirlwind and a very naughty puppy at times but he's also adorable. When my nan can no longer look after him he'll come and live with me and Matt.

He was 12 weeks old yesterday and today was only the second time he's been out properly for a walk, Matt and I took him to Tredegar House early this afternoon in the hope that he'd meet other dogs, which he did. He seemed to have a ball even if he was too tired to walk back to the car.

Grampy

On Tuesday 9th August my grandfather, my grampy, died. He had been fighting prostate cancer which had unfortunately spread to his bones, he was offered an MRI scan too late and he slowly slipped away. I've experienced loss before but nothing has compared to this.

My grampy was the best grandfather in the world, he was everything you could want from a grandfather. My childhood was filled with caravan holidays with my grandparents to Monmouthshire, my brother and I would camp out in his shed when we visited, he'd talk to us about the war when he would tell us all about the time he stood on top of David Morgan's in Cardiff and watched Swansea burn during the blitz. My grandparents were like second parents to me, which I suppose is what grandparents are meant to be.

I will miss him more than I can say.

Rest in peace, Grampy Ken.

I've been a good shopper

After going shopping with Matt on the weekend and hardly buying anything I went back in on Tuesday I did much better. You know it's a good shopping trip when you come home with two pairs of shoes. Most of the things I bought were boring work clothes but there were a few gems thrown.

I've used these for the last two days and I'm seriously impressed. My skin has been really quite oily for the last month or so (thank you hormones!) but I've noticed the difference in how well my make up stays put and the pressed powder has really helped how my skin looks. Thanks to the 2 for 3 offer currently in Boots I got the cheaper of the two free.

Both shoes are from New Look, the black shoes were £15.99 and the others were £19.99. I can't decide whether to keep the shoes on the right, they look ok with trousers but not with a skirt/dress. They're suitably smart for work though which I like, what to do?

These beauties were flung over the back gate when I got home. I love them! I can't wait to wear them out tomorrow, they make me almost as tall as Matt.

I was really surprised by this blouse, I saw it on the hanger and wasn't overly thrilled with it but when I tried it on I fell in love with it. It's from Marks and Spencer too! I can see it looking great tucked into a pair of jeans and worn with wedges.

Yesterday was a great day for parcels arriving, my E.L.F order arrived along with two necklaces from Sunken Rose.

How cute is the teapot? It's my new favourite necklace which I put on as soon as it arrived.

By the time this posts I'll be back in town buying the things I forgot to buy on Tuesday. Looks like my shopping mojo is back!

E.L.F. Nails

Look what turned up today! I ordered this on Monday and it arrived today, I'm very impressed. I made use of the 20% off code on their facebook profile to place my first order, I just wish I had ordered more brushes but this has been a good introduction to E.L.F. so far. I ordered four nail polishes, two complexion brushes (one for blusher and one for my new Witch powder) as well as a lash and eyebrow brush. I've already tried out the nail polishes.

From left to right: Mango Madness, Nude, Berry Pink, Champagne
The photo doesn't do justice of how bright Mango Madness is in the bottle, it's a wonderfully bright coral colour that leans towards the orange side rather than pink. At £1.50 I'm really impressed by them, the consistency of the polish is perfect, not too thick and not too runny. The only gripe I have is that the brush for Mango Madness isn't blunt at the end but that doesn't bother me too much and it didn't alter how it went onto my nails.

Left to right: Mango Madness, Champagne, Berry Pink, Nude - all with two coats.
All of the colours look great with two coats apart from Nude, I'd say it needs three coats to not look transparent. I've decided to go with Mango Madness which I'm hoping will clash in a good way with the blue dress I'm wearing out tomorrow. If the colour hasn't chipped in three or four days (my track record so far) then I'll definitely be buying more, for £1.50 these are a great bargain.

Left - with flash. Right - without flash.

I'm sitting on the roof of my house, with a shotgun and a six pack of beer

I had a bit of a shopping spree yesterday, not a big one at all but the most I've spent purely on myself in quite some time. I am really bummed that I didn't find any clothes for work which is mainly what I wanted, either there was nothing work appropriate in the shops or everything didn't fit me. To be honest when the city centre is as packed as it was yesterday it's hard to have a proper look around so I'm going to go back in during the week when it's a bit quieter.

1&2. L'Oreal Lash Architech mascara. I went to Boots intending to buy the Telescopic mascara but I was a bit put off by the teeny brush. I'm SO glad I went for the mascara I did, I'm really impressed by it! I'm going to buy the waterproof version in July to wear to a wedding (I already know I'll cry more than at my own).
3&4. I've been using this blusher for years, every time I go to try a different one I come back to it. I'm too afraid to try other blushers mainly due to being afraid of looking like I've been playing with my mums makeup. This colour suits me perfectly.
5. A swatch of the blusher without flash.
6. With flash.
7&8. Two bargain jackets I bought in New Look. I've wanted a short mac for a while and this was down from £34.99 to £16! I tried the striped jacket on a few weeks ago but decided not to buy it because of the cost, yesterday I got it for £13 instead of £39.99. I'm so happy with these two.
9. I didn't actually buy these yesterday, I got them on Thursday on a random trip to M&S with my mum. I wasn't even intending to buy any shoes but they were in the sale so I got them for £15.
10&11. Cardigan from H&M. I'm not 100% that I'll keep it, £24.99 seems a bit steep for H&M especially when there quality can be a bit shoddy.
12, 13&14. Best. Foundation. In. The. World.

Whilst lounging around in my PJs this morning I bought a pair of wedges from the New Look website, there wasn't a single pair in size 4 in either store yesterday so I'm really hoping that I'll like them when they turn up.

I've not done a great deal today, a friend came over earlier to do a trial run on my hair for a wedding I'm going to in July. I'm not great at doing my own hair, the only things I can do with it is wearing it down, in a pony tail and in a bun.

I so wish I had this style for my own wedding but oh well. I had to take it out to go out to the pub earlier and I can't believe how many pins were in it! I have a sneaky feeling that I'll be one of the few people wearing a facinator at the wedding as I don't think women tend to wear them as much anymore which I think is a shame as I really like them, none of my friends wore them at my wedding.

Does anyone have any recommendations for work appropriate clothes?

Wedges

I've never owned a pair of wedges, is that strange? They've been in fashion quite a few times during my almost 26 years on this planet but I've never really bought into them. I've decided that this must change.
Next week I'm going out for dinner/drinks for a friend's birthday, I've decided to wear a dress I bought in NYC a few years ago but it's a dress I've only ever worn with flats. Seeing as this is a bit more of a dressed up affair I want to wear heels and seeing as my mojo has gone I had to ask my mum (!!) what kind of shoes to wear with the dress.

Cue some not so great photos of me in the dress almost two years ago:

Man alive, pasty legs or what?

Dodgy photo of me but it shows the top of the dress.

Leather Pleated Wedge. New Look. £29.99
Pleated Rope Wedge. New Look. £24.99
Pleated Strappy Wedge. New Look. £24.99
High Strappy Wedge. New Look. £24.99
Wilma T-Bar Wedge. Miss Selfridge. £45.00
Leather Bow Wedge. New Look. £39.99
Has anyone seen any other wedges out there that would go with my dress? I'm going to town on Saturday with Matt (hurrah for pay days) where I'll probably head straight for New Look to try on as many of the wedges as I can find.

One last photo that I love because I like how my hair looks in it. I have no idea what to do with my hair at the moment, it's very frustrating.

Look how long it is! And yes, I give plants to my friends on their birthdays.

Blog Shop

Today I have finally found the motivation to look through virtually all of my clothes to decide on what I want to keep and what I think can find homes elsewhere. I've started a blog shop over at Ruby Red Slippers Blog Sale to try and make a bit of money to put towards the terribly expensive business that is buying a house. At the moment there are a couple of items of clothes but I'll be updating it in the next few days with more clothes, shoes, DVDs and, er...a laminator (speak now if you want an A4 laminator!)

I have to say, trawling through all of my clothes has taught me to never say "But I have nothing to wear!" ever again. Who knew I had so many dresses hidden away?

Work wear

I have  finally been given a start date for my new job! I was told I had got the job almost a month ago (a month ago this Friday actually) but because of the bank holidays and then a not so nice ex manager there have been a lot of delays. I have another two full weeks off before I start so I have a bit of time to think about what I'm going to wear.

In two previous jobs I've had quite relaxed rules on what I could wear to work, anything was ok apart from jeans and t shirts with slogans on. In another job I was given a suit to wear so I didn't ever have to think about what to put on in the morning (FYI, I hated wearing a suit). This time around I want to look presentable and lady like so I seem to be heading towards wearing dresses to work which is something I only used to do in the winter when I could wear knitted dresses and boots to work.

Having been online window shopping I've spotted quite a lot of dresses I like, all of the ones I'm posting today are from Tesco and are available online.

All three dresses are £18.00 each

£20.00  £18.00  £18.00
It amazes me that most of the dresses are under £20, I already own a shift dress from Tesco - which I wore to the job interview that got me my new job - and the quality is great. My absolute favourite of all the above dresses is the bottom middle dress, it screams summer at me. At least two of the others I have a feeling are a bit too old for me and if I try them on I may not like them as much, it's kind of how I feel about Phase Eight, it's a shop I love but at 25 I feel too young for their clothes.

I wonder how long I'll last before caving and I start wearing trousers and ballet pumps to work?

Lord, give me grace and dancing feet

1&2. A few weeks ago I placed an order with our Avon lady, I'd forgotten about it until it turned up this week. I ordered 'Pout' lipstick (which looks nothing like the photo in the magazine but I really like it), a natural tones eye shadow palette and a spray that claims to speed up nail polish drying time, I've yet to try it out. It was amusing that the pallette had some similar colours to the Urban Decay palette I got this week, it's staying power is pretty rubbish though.
3. This pallette is worth the rave reviews it's been getting all over the blogging world, it's been sold out for a while online but the Debenhams in Cardiff had a mountain of them earlier this week.
4. Pout, my new favourite lipstick.
5. Our wedding cake topper, the mini me is a fairly spot on version of what I looked like. This week I've been thinking of doing a cherish the dress shoot, my dress is still under my bed as I can't stand to be parted from it.
6. Matt and I are planning a trip to the USA in autumn, Matt's never been to either city despite being American. I went to NYC back in 2008 and I would really love to go back. We're planning on staying at the hotel I stayed at back when I went, I don't give the name out to many people though as I don't want the whole world knowing about it.
7. On 1 July Matt and I along with my parents are going to watch A Midsummer's Night Dream in Cardiff Castle, my birthday is a couple of days later so we're using it as an early birthday treat meaning there will be a fancy picnic and lots of champagne.
8. My lovely top from Tesco, I've had it for a couple of weeks but I've only been able to wear it this week as I finally got a new pair of skinny jeans (I don't do leggings).
9. Today has revolved around going to PC World to find me a new laptop, my not even three year old Dell has died but in order to save money I'm going to get a netbook instead of a laptop. We stopped into Waitrose on the way home where I treated myself to a cupcake, the photo shows the iced flower that was on top. I can never bring myself to eat that bit.
10. I've just finished chowing down on a lovely lamb balti from Empire, probably one of the best Indian restaurants in Cardiff.

Today has been a good day

I'd love to say that in the last two or so weeks since I last blogged I'd been super busy which is why I've not written anything on here but that's not really true. I'm still waiting to start work, one of the references is taking an age and I can't sign a contract and have a start date until that comes through, in the mean time I've become a bit of a house wife. My days are pretty much centred around cleaning, doing the laundry and ironing. It's not as terrible as it sounds, honest.

Yesterday I had a welcome break and spent a couple of hours wandering around town with my mum, after almost buying Urban Decay's Naked palette from Sephora over the weekend only to have Matt talk me out of it (I don't think he yet 'gets' make up) we went into Debenhams and I was confronted by a mountain of them. I almost drooled. Almost. This time my mum managed to talk me out of buying one, I am clearly easily talked out of things. After sulking for the rest of the afternoon I told Matt about it when he got home from work and he told me I should have bought it. Why are men so confusing?

Today my mum and I went back into town and said palette is now staring at me out of the corner of my left eye. It's flipping gorgeous, the packaging itself is lovely and the colours are amazing.

Yes, I may have come home with slightly more than the palette but what can I say? I needed everything, or at least that's what I'm telling myself. Actually, the only thing I really do need is the black clutch bag for a wedding I'm going to in July. Plus, who doesn't need Colin Firth in their life?

What a week

1. Me trying out the Topshop lipstick I bought last week. I swear I don't always look that crazed. 2. The street I'll be working on from now on, hello museum! 3. I spent Thursday bowling and generally having fun with my cousin and mum. 4. Matt and I spent the day with my parents in Monmouthshire, there were a lot of bluebells to be found. 5. Symonds Yat. 6. I ended up buying the Protect & Perfect system in Boots on Friday, the creams soak straight into my skin with no greasiness which is a massive win in my book.
Operation Decorate Bedroom went really well yesterday, I even rented out a carpet cleaner so now the carpet is (almost) spotless. One wall needs to be papered and another small area of the room needs to be painted and after that it's all done, it looks so much better already.

Staying youthful

I can't be the only one who likes it when things like that happen can I? I seem to have been in a life long habit of noticing numbers like that, I tend to look at a clock when it's 11:11 or 12:12.

Today has been a pretty good day, my 11 year old cousin spent the day with my mum and I which was quite cool. We all went bowling and to an amusement arcade (where my mum beat me at air hockey but the less said about that the better), we also ate at Bella Italia where the service was so so slow despite there only being four tables full in the restaurant.

It was Matt's first day at work too so it was really odd being without him all day as we've been together every day since the end of November but it's healthy to get a break and I'm looking forward to us both being in work soon as it means we can really crack on in saving for a house deposit.

Tomorrow operation Decorate Bedroom shall start with a trip to B&Q to buy all manner of paints, we're going all out and sanding all the woodwork down (ugh, I hate sanding stuff) and then glossing everything before we can really jazz up the room. None of our bedroom furniture matches which annoys the heck out of me but I'm refusing to buy a new set until we have our own place as I don't want to get things that won't fit in our house so for now I'm going with the mismatched is cool and edgy line. Yeah, I don't buy it either but such is life.

I've been online window shopping this evening, mainly for night creams and eye creams but like any woman I can go slightly off track and end up looking at other things.

I think I did damn well to keep my list to four things. I've been thinking about a night cream for the last few days, I'm currently using E54 in the night which is fine but it is greasy on my skin and really isn't meant to be used as a night cream. As I'm almost 26 I thought that it was about time I put a bit more effort into my skin, I'm naturally young looking thanks to my mother's genes and skin that can be oily, but I think everyone should think about their skin when they start to get older. The night cream and the eye cream come to £40 in total and thanks to the 3 for 2 offer Boots are currently running I could get the lipstick (L'oreal Made For Me Naturals in Cashmere) for free. After my online shop I discovered that £40 for the two creams is a bit of a steal, brands like Estee Lauder are selling one bottle of night serum for £50+ and although No 7 recommend using a serum under the cream I'm not sure exactly how useful it is, plus it's another £19.50.

A trip to Boots may be in the pipe line tomorrow so I can go and scope out the No 7 stand for myself to see what they have to offer, I'm quite excited by the prospect in a sad sort of way.

Good things come to those who wait

This week just keeps getting better!

After getting the job offer on Monday I was in two minds as to whether to go to the interview at the university today but in the end I figured that seeing as it's taken me five years just to get an interview I should at least go for the experience. I got there a bit early and felt nervous as soon as I sat down in reception which is quite unlike me, they were running late so I had to wait around for a while. The first part of my interview was a computer assessment which was ok (although working with Access again was a bit scary) and then the interview. I came out of the interview feeling quite negative, I even called my parents to tell them that I didn't think I'd get it but it was ok because I already had a job.

Just after 3pm today I got a call to say I'd got the job! I think the woman I spoke to was a bit baffled by how calmly I took the news, I was weirdly calm considering I was so excited. So, pending references I'll be starting in three weeks or there abouts. I'm still in a state of shock, the pay is better than the other job, the benefits are fantastic and it's a great place to work.

I applied to study my BA there and didn't even get an interview at the time which was a bit gutting but Swansea was my first choice as I wanted to move away so it's kind of amusing to me that I'll now be working there.

The rest of the afternoon I spent lounging around in the garden with Matt who has decided to start reading Harry Potter again. I'm ever so tempted to put on the latest DVD seeing as the sun has gone in now, I think I'm owed some sort of celebration.

Happy days!

Good news

As promised I've taken a photo of the swatches of the Topshop makeup I bought on Friday.

L-R
Eye crayon in Lazy Days
Lipstick in Show Off
Kohl in Saddle
Of all the things I looked at on the Topshop website the only thing I ended up buying that I had intented to was the kohl, I guess that's the good that comes of trying to keep an open mind. I really like the eye crayon, it's not something I'd wear in the day as it's packed with glitter but it would be great to wear out if you were going easy on the eyes and playing up your lips. The lipstick is a colour that is out of my comfort zone but I'm open to challenging myself so I went with it. It goes on really well but it does dry out my lips within seconds, it needs vaseline or gloss on over the top to stop it feeling uncomfortable. I blotted it when I first wore it and it lasted for hours even with eating and drinking which for £8 is pretty amazing. The kohl goes on smoothly and the colour is good for me as I think black would be too much for my skin tone. All in all I'm really happy with my purchases, I'm not sure I'd buy another of their lipsticks if they're all going to be as drying as this one is but I'd happily buy another of their eye crayons.

After Topshop I trotted off to Superdrug to have a browse of the makeup section, I only came away with one thing but I could have easily bought a lot more. I wish I had taken advantage of the 3 for 2 offer they were running on the L'oreal stand as I saw a lovely lipstick but didn't buy it.

I used it when I got home (I like to play with new make up when I first buy it) and it's great! I wish they did more colour combinations but at the moment there's only one on sale for blue eyes.

On the way home from town I had a phone call telling me that I hadn't been successful for the job interview that I had been to the day before, I'd given an "awesome" interview but I was "too good" for the job. Instead the guy I interviewed with was going to look for a position elsewhere for me as he wanted me on board but in a role where I wouldn't get bored so easily. When I eventually got home Matt gave me the great news that he had been offered a job that he had interviewed for the day before. Such good news!

Yesterday I went for yet another interview not really expecting to hear back about the other possible job from last week. The interview was in a local hospital doing something I've done before so I knew I could do the job. Later in the day I had a call to say that the place last week had managed to find me a position and would I be willing to accept, after explaining that I had been to an interview that day she said she'd call me back. Only minutes after that call I had another one offering me the job following the interview in the morning which I accepted so I finally have a job!! I still have another interview for a university job tomorrow which I'm still going to go to even though right now I don't feel like it but I'm going to push myself to go.

Getting this job offer has led me to browse the internet for work clothes and I've already got my eye on a few things. Ahh, I get to have a big shop soon!

It's gone

Friday's shopping trip was a damn good one. I finally spent the Topshop gift card I'd had since my birthday last July, it went on a lipstick (not any of the ones I'd eyed up on their website either), an eye liner, an eye shadow pencil and two pairs of earrings. I'm going to try and take some photos of swatches tomorrow but I'm really pleased with all of my purchases.

Not quite the weekend

Today has been quite a good day, usually days when I have a job interview aren't great because they can be quite stressful and tiring but the one I went to today left me feeling really positive. It's a month by month contract at a local university through a recruitment agency and if I'm honest, before I got there I wasn't feeling all that great about it because of the pay and lack of proper contract (knowing that if it was a perm position I'd be getting £6k more a year for doing it doesn't help) but the people that interviewed me were really nice and seemed really responsive to what I was saying. I also got to use a Mac computer for the first time ever and I was pretty much in love with it.

I have two more interviews next week, one is in a local hospital for a six month contract but the doors it could open for me if I get it are many. On Wednesday I have an interview which has taken me five years to get, I was so happy when I got the e mail offering me the interview yesterday, I felt like I'd just been offered a great job. I first applied to this place when I left university and up until now my applications have never been detailed enough I'm guessing, their application process is tough and it's really hard to get in there so I'm actually not that confident that I'll actually get the job. I have a horrid feeling that the pressure of it will get to me and I'll balls it up, that's five years worth of pressure on my shoulders.

I'm in such a shopping mood at the moment, it's driving me crazy. Months of not being able to just go nuts are getting to me I suppose, I've not really shopped in over a year. When I got engaged in December 2009 I just seemed to stop spending money unless it was wedding related. I'm going to town tomorrow and have a shopping list, I'm not sure that I'll end up with everything on the list so perhaps I should call it a wish list.

Ohh La La lipstick, Topshop
Live Salon Style Hair Colour in Honey Brown
Kohl in Saddle, Topshop
Green cardigan, Dorothy Perkins
263 brush, MAC
L'oreal Colour Appeal Trio eyeshadow for blue eyes
I'm kind of half undecided about the MAC brush, Benefit do a brush like it for less money and whilst I do like Benefit brushes (their foundation brush is fab) I'm not sure whether to spend the money or find something cheaper.

Fingers crossed that I won't talk myself out of buying anything tomorrow, I've got into such a rut of not spending money that when I have to I have to force the card out of my purse.
